BallStreams, and the legal way to watch the NBA

BallStreams was unusual in this category because it charged a subscription. Paying for an unauthorized service does not make it a licensed one.

What BallStreams is

BallStreams sold a subscription for NBA streams, which set it apart from the free ad-supported aggregators. It looked and priced like a legitimate service.

It was not one. The service held no NBA rights, ran its infrastructure offshore, and operated on the assumption that distance from US courts was protection enough.

That distinction matters for anyone comparing prices. A subscription fee is not evidence of a licence, and paying a site does not transfer any rights to you as a viewer.

Where it stands now

Paid unauthorized services have proved no more durable than the free ones. The enforcement pattern of the last two years has been to dismantle networks and pursue operators rather than block single domains, per The New York Times.

Coordinated domain seizures have hit dozens of sports streaming sites at a time, per TorrentFreak, and the two largest free basketball piracy brands went dark at the end of 2024, per Front Office Sports.

If you are willing to pay for NBA streams, the licensed options below cost broadly the same and do not disappear.

What the free route actually costs

The sticker price is zero. The real cost shows up in four places, and every one of them is worse during a game you care about.

  • The feed dies at the worst moment. Unauthorized re-broadcasts are taken down mid-game by rights holders. That tends to happen in the fourth quarter of the game with the largest audience, because that is when the takedown is worth the most to the broadcaster.
  • The advertising is the business model. These sites monetize through pop-unders, forced redirects and malicious ad networks, because no licensed advertiser will buy the inventory. Running one without a blocker is a genuine device risk.
  • Nobody is accountable to you. There is no support desk, no refund, no uptime commitment and no one to contact when a stream is 90 seconds behind the live score.
  • Your legal exposure depends on where you live. Enforcement has moved from chasing single domains to dismantling whole networks and prosecuting operators, per The New York Times. Viewers are rarely the target, but ISP-level blocking is now routine across the UK, Italy, Spain and Australia.

The legal routes below cost money. They also start when you press play and are still running at the final buzzer.

Where to watch BallStreams's coverage legally

BallStreams was an NBA product, so this is the straightforward comparison to make.

LeagueLegal route
NBALeague Pass for out-of-market games, national rights holders in market, licensed operator streams by country.
WNBAWNBA League Pass plus national broadcasters, May to October.
NCAA Division IConference networks in season, national partners in March.
EuroLeagueEuroLeague TV plus your domestic rights holder.

Rights change every season and vary by country. The how to watch guide carries the country-by-country map and is reviewed monthly.

On basketballstreams.com the fixtures, live scores, standings, head-to-head records and form data across 36 leagues are free and need no account. The live video sits with a licensed operator, either Bet365 or Stake depending on which one holds a licence where you are, and unlocking it takes a funded account rather than a subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Was BallStreams legal because you paid for it?

No. A subscription fee is not a licence, and the service held no NBA rights. Paying an unauthorized operator does not transfer any rights to the viewer.

How much does NBA League Pass cost compared to services like BallStreams?

The two land in a broadly similar range, which is the point. Pricing on League Pass varies by market and package, so check the current rate for your country.

What is the catch with League Pass?

Local and national blackouts. League Pass is built for out-of-market viewing, so games shown by a national broadcaster where you live are usually not included.

Where can I see which games are on tonight?

Our live page and today page list every fixture across every league we track, free, with the licensed streaming route for each one.
