The NBA is between seasons, but the WNBA supplies a seven-day schedule with enough contrast to reward a close watch. Minnesota Lynx and Golden State Valkyries meet again almost immediately, the Valkyries then get a second look at New York, and Connecticut visits Indiana with a sharp perimeter question attached to Friday night.

The Week Ahead watchlist

Golden State Valkyries @ Minnesota Lynx (WNBA)

Date: 2026-08-24

The angle: whether Golden State can change the matchup after Minnesota won the last meeting.

The calendar gives the Valkyries a quick chance to respond. Minnesota beat Golden State 77-66 on Aug. 20, and the Lynx have also won the two earlier meetings in the current series, 81-75 on June 20 and 87-84 on June 4. That is a useful head-to-head sample, but the short turnaround matters more than the history if Golden State can force a different first quarter.

Minnesota's latest five-game sample is built on a 4-1 run and 92.0 points per game. Golden State has also gone 4-1 in its latest five, scoring 91.0 per game, while protecting the ball better with 9.8 turnovers to Minnesota's 13.2. The Valkyries need that possession edge to survive the Lynx's half-court organization. Minnesota will be content to make every cut and entry pass carry a defensive cost, then use its size to turn a miss into a controlled possession.

Chicago Sky @ Connecticut Sun (WNBA)

Date: 2026-08-25

The angle: free throws, especially if the Sun can turn paint touches into a reliable scoring floor.

Connecticut and Chicago arrive from opposite ends of the recent results column. The Sun are 1-4 in their latest five, while the Sky are 1-4 as well, but their recent offensive shapes are different. Chicago has scored 91.2 points per game in that sample. Connecticut has scored 77.6, and its 70.6% free-throw conversion rate trails Chicago's 75.8%.

That is not just a box-score footnote for a Connecticut team that needs efficient possessions. The Sun have already lost to Chicago 94-88 on July 30, then watched Washington win by creating pressure at the rim and finishing 28 of 33 free throws. Connecticut's best version here has to make Chicago choose between helping on drives and conceding clean kick-out chances. A few extra trips to the line can keep the offense from becoming dependent on contested threes.

Toronto Tempo @ Seattle Storm (WNBA)

Date: 2026-08-26

The angle: pace and whether either defense can stop a game from becoming a track meet.

This is a useful midweek contrast because both teams are coming off stretches that have produced plenty of points and too few wins. Seattle has allowed 94.6 points per game over its latest five, while Toronto has allowed 97.2. The combined scoring averages in those samples are 184.2 for the Storm and 182.6 for the Tempo.

The numbers point toward a game with a high possession count, but pace is only useful if a team can keep its shape after the first action. Seattle has averaged 13.0 turnovers in the sample and Toronto 15.0. That difference could be decisive in a matchup where live-ball mistakes turn directly into the transition opportunities both offenses want. Seattle needs to push without rushing its reads. Toronto has to get back, load the lane, and make the Storm earn its points against a set defense.

Golden State Valkyries @ New York Liberty (WNBA)

Date: 2026-08-27

The angle: New York's work on the glass against a Golden State team that has been competitive on the defensive boards.

By Thursday, Golden State will have played Minnesota and Connecticut before visiting New York, which makes the Liberty's rebounding advantage worth tracking. New York has averaged 39.6 rebounds across its latest five games. Golden State has averaged 34.2. The Liberty also have a 4-1 record in that sample, while the Valkyries enter the week at 4-1 in their own latest five.

New York's size gives it a way to punish a defense that survives the first action. A missed shot that becomes a second chance can force Golden State to defend through another rotation, and those repeated efforts eventually open the passing lanes New York prefers. The Valkyries need to make the initial shot quality good enough that the rebounding gap does not become a steady source of extra possessions.

Connecticut Sun @ Indiana Fever (WNBA)

Date: 2026-08-28

The angle: recent three-point accuracy, with Indiana offering the stronger shooting baseline.

Indiana has made 43.2% of its threes over its latest five games, compared with 35.8% for Connecticut. The Fever have also scored 98.6 points per game in that stretch, while the Sun have scored 77.6. Those are large recent gaps, and the last meeting was even more emphatic: Indiana won 123-88 on July 22.

Connecticut cannot allow that earlier game to dictate the next one, but it does need to change the geometry. The Sun must run Indiana's shooters off the line without opening a clean driving lane, then make enough threes of their own to keep the Fever from shrinking the floor. Connecticut's 16.4 turnovers per game in its latest five are another warning. Empty possessions give Indiana more chances to turn its shooting advantage into a separation run.

Minnesota Lynx @ Atlanta Dream (WNBA)

Date: 2026-08-30

The angle: recent defensive form, with Minnesota allowing fewer points per game than Atlanta.

Sunday's finale brings together two teams that have both gone 3-2 in their latest five, but Minnesota has been the cleaner defensive group. The Lynx have allowed 86.8 points per game in that sample, compared with 89.4 for Atlanta. Minnesota has also scored 92.0 per game, six points more than the Dream's 86.0 over the same stretch.

Atlanta can make that comparison less relevant by controlling the glass. The Dream have averaged 36.6 rebounds in their latest five, ahead of Minnesota's 32.0. That advantage gives Atlanta a route to extra possessions, particularly if it can turn offensive rebounds into quick interior scores before the Lynx defense is set. Minnesota needs to keep the first shot from becoming a two-part possession and make Atlanta win through its half-court execution.
